Saint-Martin-de-Ré to La Flotte — The Coastal Classic

The perfect first route for anyone just arriving on the island. Easy, scenic and packed with things to discover.

Starting at the port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the path follows the coastline south towards La Flotte with open views over the Atlantic. Along the way, don’t miss the Vauban fortifications listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the pretty harbour of La Flotte with its local fish market and beautiful beach.

Around 6 km, approximately 30 minutes. Easy level, ideal for families, kids and first-time visitors.

La Couarde to Ars-en-Ré — Through the Salt Marshes

One of the most iconic cycling experiences on the island. Leaving from La Couarde-sur-Mer, the cycle path winds through vast salt marshes where local producers harvest fleur de sel by hand. Keep an eye out for herons, egrets and avocets along the way.

The route ends in the charming village of Ars-en-Ré, recognisable by its iconic black and white church spire. Stop at a local shop to pick up the famous Sel de Ré.

Saint-Clément-des-Baleines — Discover the Lighthouse

A must-do on any cycling tour of the island. Starting from Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, the path passes through pine forests and dunes before arriving at the famous Phare des Baleines. Climb to the top for panoramic views over the Atlantic, then relax on the coast or explore the rock pools with the kids.

Les Portes-en-Ré — Into the Wild

For those who love unspoilt nature. From the village of Les Portes-en-Ré, paths lead through the famous Trousse-Chemise forest towards the wild northern coastline and its uncrowded beaches. The landscape feels genuinely remote, just you, the pine trees and the sound of the ocean. Riding through this part of the island, with miles of peaceful paths stretching ahead, is an experience you will not forget.

The Grand Tour — Cycling Around the Whole Island

The ultimate cycling adventure. The full circuit covers around 70 to 80 km and links all the main towns and villages : Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, La Couarde-sur-Mer, Ars-en-Ré, Loix, Saint-Martin-de-Ré and Saint-Clément-des-Baleines.

 

Experienced cyclists can complete the full tour in one long day. For families or leisure cyclists, splitting it over two or three days works perfectly.
